Let’s go back in time and visit the evocative city of Venice. During the 13th and 18th centuries, Venice was one of the wealthiest port cities. Even today, the character of this city is still very strong, pulling you into a time capsule where you can escape the modern world. 1. You Can Truly Escape the Modern World!
Some of the world’s most advanced GPS technology is unable to track the hidden paths and roadways in Venice. When we arrived in Venice, we tried to find our hotel by foot using Google Maps, but the GPS was confused when we turned certain corners. However, getting lost and discovering new hidden paths was the beauty of our adventure! So when you arrive, put away your phone since the GPS will not work, talk to the locals, and get ready to discover the beauty of Venice!
2. Cars Are Not Common!
Have you ever lived in a city where cars do not really exist? In Venice, the roads are replaced by canals. You can explore this beautiful city without the sound of horns, tires, and traffic. So if you’re looking to get around, explore these ancient roads by foot, gondola, or water taxi!

Why settle for the cheesy gondola ride in places like Vegas when you could experience the real thing?
Sit back and relax as the gondolier maneuvers you through the quiet and peaceful canals of Venice. Some gondoliers will sing, but from our experience, most will not. However, taking the time to relax in one of these quintessential boats is a memory you will never forget.
4. Seafood Heaven!
If you’re not allergic to seafood, you’re going to eat your heart out in Venice.
Restaurants in Venice have an endless supply of fresh seafood available from their local fishermen. Some of the best seafood dishes I’ve ever had were in Venice.
5. Venice is Sinking!
With rising sea levels, and with its foundation subsiding, many locals and scientists have admitted that the city is sinking. When you walk the streets of this city, you will notice flood lines alongside buildings, which many have noted as worsening each year. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit and capture memories of a city that will one day be lost.
6. Visit One of the Most Colorful Islands
Take time to visit Burano! I unfortunately did not make it to this famous color blocking town, but if you’re looking for awesome lace pieces, shopping, and amazing Instagram photo ops, make room in your schedule for a day trip to Burano. I am told it is only a 45 minute boat ride away.
7. The Glass Island
Another great day trip from Venice is the island of Murano, also known as the glass island. Venetian glass is world-renowned, dating back to the 1200’s! This island is only 10 minutes away from Venice.
8. Architecture Treasures
The gothic architecture in Venice is absolutely beautiful, causing you to stop mid-stride and
admire its handcrafted detail. Take a boat ride down the famous Grand Canal, or be adventurous and get lost in the hidden pathways of this charming city. Another famous place to visit is Piazza San Marco. Take time to marvel at the architecture, grab a Spritzer, and people watch. But, whatever you do, don’t feed the birds!
9. Shopping & More Shopping!
Whether you’re looking for craft glass pieces, designer boutiques, wine shops, or just souvenirs for your family and friends, Venice has it all! Don’t forget to save your receipts. You can receive a tax refund on purchases at the airport prior to departure if you’re a non-EU citizen. Just let the cashier know prior to paying.
10. Eat & Fall In Love
If you’re looking for REAL Italian food, plan to eat your way through Venice! Ask the locals for some of their favorite places to eat to avoid tourist restaurants. You’ve never had pasta until you have homemade pasta with a nice bottle of wine. Find a boat, take a seat outside overlooking the water, order your server’s recommendation, and enjoy a breathtaking sunset as you enjoy your dinner by yourself or with those you love.
